Role Description

We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO). Our ideal candidate is a financial controller with a CPA license and experience working for a client-focused professional services company. This individual will play a key role in overseeing financial operations and enhancing administrative capabilities across human resources, technology administration, 401(k) administration, and contract management.

The CFAO reports directly to the President and leads the finance and administration organization (F/A). The CFAO works with the CEO and management team to support the development of and enable the company's long and short-term strategy. This role currently requires directing and managing our Controller and one employee that supports accounting and other administrative functions.

Excellent communication skills are required as this position interacts externally with our clients and vendors as well as internally with our accounting staff, practice leads, and employees.

Responsibilities

Accounting, Finance, and Reporting

  • Updating and implementing the annual and long-term operations planning and approach.
  • Overseeing and using our financial system (Unanet) for financial and cost accounting activities, including project reporting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Overseeing payroll via third-party provider (ADP WorkForce Now).
  • Supporting project administration and performance activities.
  • Leading and providing guidance for all accounting, financial reporting, investments, and cash management.

Human Resources

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and municipal laws and requirements.
  • Identifying potential risks to Sapere's operations from proposed state and federal labor requirements.
  • Updating and implementing Sapere's compensation strategy and employee handbook.
  • Leading and providing guidance for employee recruiting, performance assessment, and compliance training.

401(k) Administration

  • Executing Sapere's 401(k) Safe Harbor Plan, including interactions with Sapere's 401(k) Committee Chair, third-party administrator, and financial firm.

Technology Administration

  • Updating and implementing our internal technology operations and purchases.
  • Administering our cybersecurity policies.
  • Leading and providing guidance on technology purchases, license administration, and vendor oversight.

Contract Administration and Risk Management

  • Managing client and vendor agreements.
  • Leading and providing guidance on pricing, business insurance, and compliance.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Minimum four-year degree in finance or accounting

  2. CPA license required with strong US GAAP knowledge

  3. Ten years' experience in a controller role or in direct support of a controller

  4. Experience working for a professional services firm that is client-focused and requires responsive financial and administrative support

  5. Excellent communication skills both for providing services to clients' administrative organizations and internally with President, Practice Leads, and employees

  6. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with:

    • Shaping and improving administrative functions
    • Creating scalable process and systems to comply with administrative requirements
    • Human resources information management systems including employee performance and compensation evaluation tools
    • Federal and state tax regulations
    • Financial and time-tracking systems (e.g., Unanet)
    • Cost accounting, including project cost accounting
    • Financial accounting
    • Banking
    • Payroll systems (e.g., ADP WorkForce Now)
    • Professional services budget formulation
    • Key performance indicator development and reporting
    • Pricing
    • Microsoft Teams environment

Compensation

At Sapere, we provide market-based salaries (based on experience), additional incentive compensation based on performance, and an excellent benefits package that includes health, vision, dental, short-term and long-term disability insurance, paid time off, 8 holidays, and a great 401(k) plan (Safe Harbor with 3% employer contribution regardless of employee contribution).

Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000.
